“My Dog Is Scratching. She Must Be Allergic to Chicken.”

It is one of the most common assumptions in veterinary dermatology.

A dog develops itchy skin, recurrent ear infections or starts licking its paws, and the first conclusion is often:

“She must be allergic to chicken.”

While food allergies certainly occur in dogs, the reality is that they are far less common than many people realise.

Studies suggest that less than 1% of all dogs have a food allergy. Even among dogs presented specifically for allergic skin disease, only approximately 10–15% are ultimately diagnosed with a food allergy.

In other words, if ten itchy dogs walk into a veterinary clinic, roughly nine will have something other than a food allergy as the primary cause of their skin disease.

Yet food allergy is often the first diagnosis suspected by owners.

Why?

Because changing food is easy. Diagnosing skin disease is not.

If It Isn’t Chicken, What Is It?

Skin disease is rarely straightforward.

Many itchy dogs are affected by one or more of the following conditions:

Flea Allergy Dermatitis

A common misconception is that owners would see fleas if fleas were the problem.

Unfortunately, this is usually not the case.

Dogs with flea allergy dermatitis can react to a very small number of flea bites. Some dogs may experience significant itching even when fleas are not seen.

Globally, flea allergy remains one of the most common causes of allergic skin disease.

Environmental Allergies

Environmental allergies, also known as atopic dermatitis, are among the most common causes of chronic itching in dogs.

Affected dogs may react to allergens such as:

  • House dust mites

  • Storage mites

  • Pollens

  • Moulds

  • Environmental allergens

Unlike food allergies, these allergens are often impossible to completely avoid, which is why long-term management is frequently required.

Bacterial and Yeast Infections

Skin infections are extremely common in itchy dogs.

Bacteria and yeast thrive on inflamed skin and can dramatically worsen itching, redness and discomfort.

In many patients, these infections are secondary to an underlying problem that still needs to be identified and managed.

Food Allergy

Food allergies do occur and should always be considered in appropriate cases.

The key point is that they should not automatically be assumed to be the cause of every itchy dog.

Is Chicken Really the Most Common Food Allergy?

In short, no. 

When researchers reviewed dogs with confirmed food allergies, chicken accounted for less than 15% of reported food allergens. Beef and dairy products however accounted for greater than half of all food allergens.

This means that even among dogs that genuinely have a food allergy, the majority are reacting to something other than chicken.

This does not mean chicken cannot be responsible. It simply means that removing chicken from the diet may not automatically solve the problem.

The Problem With Guessing

Many owners try multiple diets before seeking professional advice.

They switch from chicken to lamb.

Then lamb to fish.

Then fish to grain-free.

Months may pass without a clear diagnosis.

Unfortunately, this trial-and-error approach can create several problems:

  • The underlying disease remains untreated.

  • Secondary infections continue to cause discomfort.

  • Valuable time is lost.

  • Future dietary investigations may become more difficult.

Dermatology is rarely about guessing.

It is about systematically ruling diseases in or out until the underlying cause is identified.

How Do We Actually Diagnose Food Allergy?

One of the biggest surprises for many owners is that there is currently no reliable blood test that can diagnose food allergies in dogs. Although these tests are commercially available (and are often quite expensive!) current scientific evidence shows that they lack the accuracy needed for clinical diagnosis. 

Hair tests, saliva tests and food allergy panels marketed online have significant limitations and should not be relied upon to diagnose food allergy.

The current gold standard remains a dietary elimination trial.

This involves feeding a carefully selected diet exclusively for a prescribed period of time while monitoring clinical signs.

While this process requires commitment, it remains the most reliable way to diagnose food allergy.

Can Dogs Have More Than One Allergy?

Absolutely.

Many dogs with food allergies also have environmental allergies.

This is one of the reasons why some dogs improve after a diet change but never become completely normal.

Skin disease is often multifactorial, meaning that several conditions may be contributing to the same clinical signs.

Successful management depends on identifying all of those contributing factors.

Why a Proper Investigation Matters

Veterinary dermatology is not about finding a stronger medication or switching foods repeatedly until something works.

It is about understanding why the skin is diseased in the first place.

Only by identifying the underlying cause can an effective long-term treatment plan be developed.

The Bottom Line

Only a small percentage of dogs are truly food allergic, and even among those dogs, chicken is responsible for only a tiny proportion of cases.

Most itchy dogs are suffering from other conditions such as flea allergy, environmental allergies, skin infections, or a combination of several factors.

The goal of veterinary dermatology is not simply to change foods until something works. The goal is to identify the underlying cause of disease and develop a treatment plan tailored to each individual patient.
